I work in a medical spa and want to offer waxing to my clients but think it will interfere with other services that they are getting. Can you give me your suggestions on what I can offer with out harming my client?

Although there are many services provided in a medical spa that can be combined with waxing, you must be very careful in offering services that will harm your client’s skin. Here are some rules:
- You can wax your client before a massaging facial. After the waxing is completed apply a cool compress or cold stones to the area for about 10 minutes. This will reduce any inflammation and close pores. Select mild products for the facial and suggest he or she moistures their skin more frequent for the next few days.
- Never wax a Client that is using prescription acne medication or skin care products that contain over 8% of glycolic acid and alphahydroxy acids or Retin-A or Accutane ingredients.
- Do not wax a Client that has had BOTOX treatment in the past 72 hours.
- Do not wax a Client that has had a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment within 90 days.
Why does some wax remain on the skin when waxing my client?
Sometimes your client’s skin is very dry and dehydrated, especially during the cold winter months. The skin just needs to be rehydrated. Try using Satin Hydrate moisturizing lotion prior to the waxing. Apply a small amount on the area to be waxed, allow time to dry, and then begin to wax. Another reason could be technique – always remember to stand towards the hair growth. For example, if you’re waxing a leg, stand by the foot area. This will give you better leverage to pull the strip off quickly, without breaking hair.
Am I still able to wax if I'm using a
tanning bed?
Absolutely! Just remember to wait 24 hours
before or after you tan, since both services can
make your skin quite sensitive.
As a frequent user of tanning beds,
should I wax before or after a tanning
session?
Nothing looks better than a tanned waxed body.
Whether you wax before or after a tanning
session really doesn't make a difference, just
remember to wait 24 hours between
services. This waiting time allows your skin's pH
level to return to normal and reduces any
type of inflammation that may be caused by
either service.
What is a Satin Smooth® Client Record Card?
Satin Smooth has created a
Client Record Card that will allow you to keep track of your client's skin and health conditions. This card should be reviewed by the client and signed prior to any waxing service. The card includes questions on medication, skin condition, allergies, facial skin care and treatments, etc. Using this card will provide professional credibility to your service and allow you to provide the safest hair removal.
What types of health conditions and medications interfere with waxing?
Satin Smooth does not recommend a waxing service if your client:
- Uses prescription acne medication such as Retin-A®* or Accutane®*.
- Uses skin care products that contain over eight percent glycolic and alphahydroxy acids.
- Takes blood pressure medication.
- Has diabetes, phlebitis or any condition that affects the skin.
- Has had a Botox®* treatment in the past 72 hours.
- Has had a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment within the past 90 days.
When in doubt, have your client consult with their doctor prior to any waxing service.
How long should hair be before
waxing?
For facial waxing, hair should be 1/8-inch
long and body hair should be about 1/4-inch long,
to achieve a smooth, clean removal.
During the summer months, it’s recommended
to rebook your client every two
to three weeks for facial waxing and three
to four weeks for body waxing. It all
depends on each client’s hair growth, as
cycles vary for everyone.
At what age can you start waxing?
Since waxing with Satin Smooth is a safe
and gentle service,we recommend waxing
for clients as young as 10 years old.
Always consult with a parent or guardian
before service.
What questions should I ask a new customer before waxing?
Ask your client if s/he is using another form of hair removal such as electrolysis or laser. Ask about chemical peels, Retin-A®* use or any type of treatment that may interfere with the waxing service. Take the time to consult with your client. If customer has never been waxed it is best to test a small area of skin first to make sure there is no acute sensitivity or allergic reaction to the waxing process. Make sure clients are warned not to expose newly waxed area directly to the sun for at least 24 hours. Satin Smooth Wax has built-in UV protectors for regular sunlight exposure. To avoid skin appearing darker after waxing we recommend using
Satin Smooth® Satin Hydrate® Skin Nourisher with UVA protection to moisturize and condition skin after waxing.
